Sustainability

Produce less, produce well.

Designed for women by women.

Our Purpose

Abysse aims to align women with ideals of sustainable fashion. Sustainability is the fundamental value of Abysse’s mindset.

We aim to create a garment made out of environmentally conscious materials, reducing our footprint on our Planet. Our dream is to empower women to reach their highest potential in and out of the water. As a conscious creator, we celebrate the opportunity to include ideals of Mother Nature, of women, and a sustainable future together.

We strongly believe that 'sustainability should not be a marketing tool, it should be a requirement.’

We aim to create a garment consciously manufactured, using recycled materials from the beginning to the end of our value chain while being consicous of our footprint on our Planet.

We aim to give our consumers the choice to support versatile products that can be used many times for many purposes across their lifespan.

Fabric Focus

Swim

We believe in using fabric that matter. To further reduce our carbon footprint on earth, we are heavily placing emphasis on traceability, transparency, and conscious material production.

Our swimwear range and active are entirely made out of 100% recycled fabric. Our classic swim and active fabric are made out of Recycled Polyester certified by Global Recy- cled Standard (GRS), and our custom ribbed fabric from Recycled Nylon certified by Global Recycled Standard (GRS), to verify the authenticity and origin of recycled content.

We are also Oeko Tex certifed, Standard 100 Oeko-tex certification ensures that no harmful substances are used in the entire fabric and garment production. All of our fabrics rate at a 4.0 GRS for knitting, dyeing, printing, finishing, and warehousing of its content, and was rated by Intertek and Control Union Certified.

All of our pieces are currently lined with the same recycled fabric, which completes our vision of unity for one 100% recycled product.

Fabric Focus

Neoprene

Abysse wetsuit range continues to exclusively be made out of premium Yamamoto Japanese Ecoprene.

Ecoprene is a limestone based neoprene, less harmful to the environment. Limestone based neoprene is earth consicous because it uses earth mined limestone to replace petrochemicals in the neoprene. It comes from nature and has less environmental impact. Although certain amount of oil is needed to make soft rubber foam, we stopped using petroleum-derived oil. Instead, we use food-grade pure Canola oil, which comes from Canola blooms for sustainability and safety.

Our westuits are made form the Earth and Flowers.

In our eyes, “Sustainability” can not always be avoiding using any resources but to consciously try to use them smartly, and kindly, and without hurting the Planet. Making Chloroprene Rubber (CR) from limestone requires a lot of energy, indeed. To reduce environmental impact, a lof the energy needed to produce our rubber comes from renewable energy sources such as hydroelectricity.

Our neoprene has ultra low resistance, superior moldability and enhanced comfort, high heat retention, light-weight and high durability. On top of it all, Ecoprene has 10 times the longevity of petroleum based neoprene. We truly believe that durability is a must while considering a sustainable, technical product such as wetsuits.

Because we believe that every single inch of our product should be recycled, we use 100% recycled lining that are entirely regenerated from post consumer plastic, that usally ends up polluting our oceans.

Closing this conscious loop is very important to us, and the thought of producing our wetsuits with materials that are damaging what we buy them to enjoy, is some kind of magic to our green hearts.

Multi-column

Packaging

We believe that packaging should be designed with intention.

All of our packaging is recyclable, compostable and designed and used with the Planet in mind. All of our polybags and bikini liners for wetsuits and swimwear are made out of corn and are 100% biodegradable. Our polybags are certified TUV OK Compost Home and Industrial certifications that validate their compostability. TUV OK Compost Industrial criteria guarantees biodegradation in line with the standard which outlines that a product must biodegrade by at least 90% into CO2 within 6 months and has no more than 1% additives which must be harmless.

We have currently added a recycled zipper to our neoprene polybags, with the goal of changing the life of this disposable item into multiple-use for our neoprene pieces.

All of our tags and mailers are made out of recycled paper material, and all our packaging is consciously printed using algae ink.

Manufacturing

A huge step for Abysse in 2022 was to move our production overseas.

We have felt very strongly about being locally made in California since our beginnings, but we decided to divert our ethos to not loose the quality of our products, and the growth of our business.

We thrive to work with factories that are in line with our core values and we are very proud to have found the perfect match for Abysse.

Our goal is that all those associated with the supply and manufacture our goods achieve prosperity in line with the values and conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
All workers, the task force comprises 75% of women, that are associated with Abysse must be treated fairly, paid a living wage and be provided a safe and healthy work environment.

Both of our factories are BSCI ranked (B and C Grade) and approved to ensure that these high stan- dards are met. Moreover,, our factories have both invested heavily in creating a sustainable work envi- ronment with adding solar pannels and recycling water to their facilities.
